Heeding Advice
April 19th, 2009
We are in the process of planning school for the fall. C4 is starting Kindergarten and A2 is starting preschool this year. This is an exciting time, but it is also a bit stressful. Of course we want to do what is best for our children. We also want to do what is best for each of us and for our family as a whole.
Right now we are wavering about whether or not homeschooling is the best choice for us this coming fall. The outside world is making me question what is right for our kids. Have you had this problem before? I keep reminding myself that I have to keep focused on what we think is best and to take only the advice that is reasonable. It is so hard to not be swayed by other people’s opinions and it is hard to discern when we should heed someone’s advice.
How do you discern what advice is worth listening to? How do you know that your decisions are the right ones for your family?

A few years ago I was debating this too, as my son was entering 1st grade and I wasn’t sure if I should keep homeschooling.
I was talking to a woman who homeschooled (really, unschooled) her six kids who are now grown – and all very accomplished and successful – and she told me to trust myself because I knew my kids and my family best.
That was it for me – from that moment on, I’ve done what I felt was right for us and not listened to outside voices. No more doubting or wondering. It’s fantastic.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that if that means sending your kids to school instead of homeschooling, do that. Whatever’s right for your family. Either way, don’t worry about what other people think.
Thank you so much for your comments. After much prayer and debate, we have decided to homeschool both of our kids next year. I am really excited about it now, too. I do believe that this is what God wants for our family, and it just feels right to us. It is hard to ignore what other people think, but you are right that I have to trust myself because I know my children better than anyone else I know. Thanks for your encouragement!
