Winter is fast approaching and there are many books and activities that you can enjoy to enhance your homeschool curriculum. One of my favorite books is Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. Bear is in a cave hibernating when all sorts of animals discover the cave as a place to warm up. Here are a few ways that you can use this book.

  • Learn about hibernation.
  • Learn about nocturnal animals.
  • Learn about mice, hares, badgers, gophers, wrens, ravens, & moles. They are all included in the story.
  • Work on rhyming words ending in the “air” sound (bear, lair, share, hare).
  • This book includes repetition as a poetic device. Have your child write poetry using this device.
  • Cook the foods featured in the book. Make stew, white popcorn, black tea, and honey nuts.
  • Build a model bear’s den.

Have fun with this great book! Do you have any other ideas for this particular book?

How about cave exploring which can lead into geologic discussions about stalagmites and stalactites. There are the Meramec Caverns in Missouri or the Carlsbad Caverns in California. Count how many days are typical for a hibernation period and how many different animals cuddle up in the cave. Write extension stories about what happens after the story ends or write a prequel about what happened before the story started. Find drawing books and learn how to draw each of the animals in the book or make your own flannel board figures or puppets to reenact the story.
Thematic studies are great and there are really an endless number of connections once you get going.
Thanks so much for what you do!

Thanks for the interesting post. I have always wanted to teach my kids about bears and this book will do the trick. I look forward to reading more from you in the future.

I think you mean the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico

I think this is so creative. I loved it when my mum would have us look at a picture or art piece and make a poem or story from it.
